Combat VeteranLanguage Profiles
Deep linguistic and cultural profiles for the three primary language families across the CENTCOM AOR.
Farsi (Persian) is an Indo-Iranian language spoken by over 110 million people across Iran, Afghanistan (as Dari), and Tajikistan. For military operators in the CENTCOM AOR, proficiency in Farsi/Dari is mission-critical for engagement across Iran, much of Afghanistan, and diaspora communities.
The language uses the Perso-Arabic script written right-to-left. Dari (Afghan Persian) is mutually intelligible with Farsi with minor vocabulary and accent differences.
Operational Phrases
Kurdish is an Indo-Iranian language spoken by 30–40 million Kurds across Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. The two primary dialects are Sorani (used in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran) and Kurmanji (northern Syria, Turkey). Kurdish is strategically vital for operations involving the Peshmerga and SDF partner forces.
Sorani uses a modified Perso-Arabic script while Kurmanji is often written in Latin script. Operators working with Kurdish partners must understand both the language and the deeply complex political identity surrounding it.
Operational Phrases (Sorani)
Arabic is a Semitic language with over 400 million speakers across 22 countries. For DOD operators, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA/Fus-ha) provides a universal baseline while Levantine and Gulf dialects are essential for street-level engagement. Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and the Gulf states each have distinct spoken varieties.
Arabic is written right-to-left in the Arabic script. Understanding diglossia — the gap between formal written Arabic and spoken dialects — is critical for effective communication in the field.

Our Story
"We don't teach from textbooks alone. We teach from the streets of Afghanistan, the checkpoints of Iraq, and the cultural moments that determine whether a mission succeeds or fails."
